Your equal rights v their unfair wrongs

August 26, 2020 By Meera Sharath Chandra

It’s going to be tough getting to the top
You feel your career grinding to a stop
No, they say, your gender doesn’t matter
Please don’t believe all that idle chatter

All things being equal, is a lovely phrase
Doesn’t help get that well-deserved raise
No, they say, your gender doesn’t matter
Let’s grab a coffee, have a good natter

Representation must improve, they believe
More change on things like maternity leave
No, they say, your gender doesn’t matter
We’re working closely on former and latter

Sure, for the next few months you’ll become
A work-from-home parent, a flexi-hour mum
No, they say, your gender doesn’t matter
But you seem to have a lot on your platter

Back at work now, you know what it takes
We didn’t expect so many feeding breaks
No, they say, your gender doesn’t matter
We too wanted the glass ceiling to shatter

The Different Stripes Di-Verse series aims to spotlight how discrimination often plays out in everyday life.
